ScribeFace turns speech into text. To do that, audio has to leave your device. This page says exactly what we send, what we keep, and what we never keep.
The short version
- We never store your audio. It is sent for transcription, transcribed, and discarded. We do not record it, archive it, or use it to train anything.
- We never store your transcripts. They are saved on your device only. We do not hold a copy.
- We do store how many minutes you used — the number, not the content — because that is what you are billed on.
- You can delete everything from inside the app, at any time.
Audio leaves your device
This is the part that matters most, so it goes first. When you record, ScribeFace sends short chunks of audio to our servers, which forward them to OpenAI for transcription using their Whisper model. The audio travels over an encrypted connection.
We do not save that audio. It exists in memory only long enough to be transcribed, and is then discarded. OpenAI's handling of API data is governed by their API data usage policies; as of writing, they state that API inputs are not used to train their models.
If you capture audio from another app on macOS, the same is true of that audio. ScribeFace requests Screen Recording permission because that is the only way macOS allows an app to capture another app's sound. We never capture, transmit, or store images of your screen. Audio only.
What we actually store
Our database holds exactly this, and nothing else:
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Your email address and account ID | So you can sign in and we know whose account is whose. |
| Your plan and subscription status | So we know what you have access to. |
| Minutes used, and when | So we can meter your free trial and bill your usage. This is a duration — a number of seconds. It is not the content of what you said. |
| Purchase records | So a purchase can be verified and restored, and so refunds work. |
Your transcripts are not in that list. They are stored locally, on your device. We never receive a copy.
Who else touches your data
- OpenAI — receives your audio to transcribe it. Nothing else.
- Clerk — handles sign-in and stores your email and login credentials.
- Neon — hosts the database described above.
- Vercel — runs our servers.
- Apple — processes purchases. We never see your payment details.
- Sentry — receives error and performance data so we can fix crashes. It does not receive your audio or your transcripts.
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. There are no ad trackers in ScribeFace.
Deleting everything
In the app, open the account menu and choose Delete account. That permanently erases your account, your usage history, your purchase records, and the transcripts stored on your device. It cannot be undone, and we do not keep a backup copy of it.
Children
ScribeFace is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that affects what we collect or who we send it to, we will update the date at the top and say so in the app.
